Natural Baby Food-African Millet
By Nnamdi Agha
This is a continuation of the article "African Millet - Baby's Nutritious Feed". Read on and discover how this highly nutritious baby feed is prepared. Preparation of Corn and Millet in Combination 1. Clean the corn (you determine the quantity you want) and wash it thoroughly with clean water. 2. Put the washed corn in a container and fill it with water and close it. 3. Every day for three days, change the water with fresh one 4. On the second day, clean and wash the millet and add to the corn in the container already undergoing fermentation. 5. On the fourth day, wash and grind the combination in a mill 6. Sieve the combination to separate the chaff from the flour which is still watery at this stage. 7. Allow the flour to settle on the bottom of the container over time and scoop out the water on the top of the container. (What we also do is to gather the watery flour in a bag(usually salt bag that has no space enough to let the flour out but water can seep out of it) and drain out the water. This method is faster.). 8. After the water is drained, the flour can be stored for some days without souring. Another way to store it is to add some quantity of water on top of it and change the water daily. However, now that we have refrigerators, we simply put it in the fridge for preservation. 9. The chaff is used as chick feed or can be reprocessed and eaten as part of a meal. If you want to process the corn and millet separately, the same process is followed. You should note that corn ferments for three days while millet is only for two days. I have mentioned how to process the millet. Find out now how to make baby food out of it. Making Baby Food Out Of Millet The preparation is simple: 1. Boil clean water 2. Take a quantity of the processed millet and put in a bowl 3. Add water to the bowl with millet and make it into a paste 4. Pour the clean boiling water into the bowl while observing it. Stop pouring when the paste begins to thicken. 5. Stir the food (for want of a better name to call it (pudding?)) thoroughly so it is evenly cooked and add milk and sugar and feed the baby if it is cool enough for the baby to eat. Some other things you may note is that millet on its own is watery when made alone. Therefore, we add corn to it to improve its consistency. However, our brothers from Northern Nigeria drink (is it eat?) millet alone as food. They call it Quokwo. They seem to enjoy it but for us from the east, it is too watery to be called food so we add corn flour to ours to thicken it. Well, I have landed. I hope I have made the process of processing millet easy enough for somebody who has not done it before to try it and give us the results. One of the reasons we enjoy millet is because of the color. The one we use here turns out creamy brown when well made and my children love it. Add sugar and milk to it and you have a wholesome food that is both nutritious and tasty. Care to try it now? If you want to sleep like a baby, get a bowl-full and down it and welcome to dreamland! If you are not yet making money writing articles, join Wikinut and make money online writing articles. |
